Milly’s Journey: Re-entering the workforce as a young mother
Milly, a young mum to her 2-year-old son, faced the daunting challenge of finding her place in the workforce after a break. Like many young parents, she struggled to balance her responsibilities as a mum, manage her personal goals, and figure out how to re-enter the working world.
“I was worried about how I would juggle everything,” she admits. “It just felt too overwhelming, and I didn’t know where to start.”
However, Milly’s journey took a positive turn when she joined the Mai-Wel Transition to Work (TtW) Program, a flexible support initiative designed to help young people, including young parents, transition into employment, education, or training.
Through the TtW Program, Milly received personalised support allowing her to pursue her passion for beauty therapy while managing her responsibilities as a young mum. With the help of her dedicated Youth Support Worker Milly not only returned to training but also secured employment in the beauty industry. She completed her Diploma of Beauty Therapy late last year and has been working at Chateau Elan ever since, growing her career further.
In January this year, Milly also secured a role as a support worker, showcasing the hard work and dedication she put into her personal and professional growth. “The obstacles of trying to balance motherhood and finding my way into work were overwhelming. But with the support of my Youth Support Manager (YSM), and my Mum, I’ve found my confidence again. Getting back into training, landing a job, and securing another role has not only helped me grow professionally but also given me a new sense of purpose.”
Milly also appreciates the flexibility the program offers. “The best part of the program is how flexible it is. I can attend appointments in person, online, or over the phone—whatever works best for me. It’s been so helpful, and that flexibility has made a huge difference in managing everything.”
Milly credits her YSM and the TtW Program for helping her regain confidence and find the career guidance she needed to succeed. “I can’t thank Mai-Wel enough for the guidance and support”.
The TtW Program is designed to assist young people like Milly, by providing flexible support in career development, training, and employment. The program offers tailored assistance to ensure participants receive the help they need to succeed, helping them take the next step in their personal and professional journey.
