From Car Wash to Detailer: Steven’s Journey with Transition to Work

When Steven first walked through the doors at Hunter Isuzu UTE Rutherford, he was an entry level car washer with a willingness to work and a quiet determination to prove himself. A little over a year on, he is a skilled detailer trusted with some of the most complex jobs in the workshop, and his story is one the Mai-Wel Transition to Work team in Maitland could not be more proud of.

A Role That Grew With Him

Steven is a participant in Mai-Wel’s Transition to Work program, which supports young people aged 15 to 24 to find and keep meaningful employment across the Hunter region. With the support of a dedicated Youth Support Mentor, participants build the skills, confidence, and connections they need to take that next step into the workforce.

For Steven, that step led him to Hunter Isuzu UTE Rutherford, where he has grown steadily in both capability and confidence. Peter Sarkis, General Manager at Hunter Isuzu UTE, has watched that growth firsthand.

“Steven now handles high-end detailing jobs with total confidence, including polishing and ceramic coatings,” Peter shared. “His can-do attitude is making a real difference to the team.”

Beyond his technical skills, what stands out most about Steven is his character. He is kind, respectful, and genuinely enthusiastic about the work he does every day, qualities that have made him a valued member of the team at Hunter Isuzu UTE Rutherford.

More Than One Passion

Alongside his employment, Steven is also pursuing his long-term passion for animal care. He has applied to study Animal Health at TAFE and has already commenced work placement in the field, an experience he describes as exciting and incredibly rewarding.

His Transition to Work support worker reflected on the journey: “Steven has overcome real barriers to get where he is today. His resilience, patience, and work ethic shine through in everything he does.”

What Comes Next

Steven’s story is a reminder of what becomes possible when a young person is given the right opportunity and the right support beside them. The Mai-Wel TtW Maitland team could not be more excited to watch where he goes next.
