Mai-Wel CEO John Cleary Awarded OAM in 2026 King’s Birthday Honours
Mai-Wel is delighted to share that Chief Executive Officer John Cleary has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List, recognised for his service to the community through the not-for-profit sector.
It is a recognition that reflects not just John’s professional achievements, but the values he brings to his work every single day.
A Career Built on Community
John’s commitment to the not-for-profit sector spans decades. Throughout that time, his focus has remained consistent, creating real opportunities for people, removing barriers to inclusion, and building communities where everyone has a place.
Under John’s leadership, Mai-Wel has grown its reach and impact significantly across the Hunter region, supporting thousands of people to build skills, gain meaningful employment, increase independence, and connect with their communities. The organisation delivers disability supports, employment services, and social enterprises across multiple sites, and continues to expand its presence in response to community need.
The OAM acknowledges what those who work alongside John already know. His dedication to this work is genuine, his belief in the people Mai-Wel supports is unwavering, and his vision for a more inclusive Hunter region continues to drive everything the organisation does.
What Comes Next
John will travel to Government House in September to formally receive his medal and certificate, marking the occasion in the way it deserves.
Congratulations, John. This recognition is a reflection of your life’s work, and it is well deserved. The entire Mai-Wel team, and the broader community you have served, could not be more pleased to see it acknowledged.
