Hunter IDPwD Community Fun Day: A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion
Today marked the 4th annual Hunter International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) Community Fun Day, a vibrant celebration of our diversely amazing community. Held under clear skies and brimming with energy, the event drew people from all walks of life to embrace inclusion, connect, and enjoy an array of engaging activities.
The day kicked off with a heartwarming highlight: the Hunter Central Coast Special Olympics torch walk, where the Flame of Hope was carried proudly through the venue, escorted by highway patrol vehicles. The lighting of the cauldron symbolised unity and empowerment. Special Olympian Ty McGill then delivered a moving rendition of the National Anthem, setting an inspiring tone for the festivities.
The event’s Inclusive Insights sessions offered attendees invaluable knowledge and perspectives. Experts from CDAH, Optimum Health Solutions, and the Hunter Central Coast Special Olympics Committee led three engaging presentations on advocacy, allied health, and community access, drawing enthusiastic participation from attendees.
Entertainment was at the heart of the Fun Day, with Mai-Wel’s EDM crew, DJ Ranstein, and Ty McGill energising the crowd. Their performances had everyone dancing and laughing, showcasing the joy and talent within our community. Meanwhile, over 20 stallholders provided a wealth of information and support, ensuring visitors left not just entertained but informed.
A standout favourite for school students was wheelchair basketball, where cheers filled the air as participants experienced the skill and excitement of the game firsthand. Adding to the day’s charm were the incredible local food and coffee trucks, The Skullery and The Bulletproof Goat, keeping everyone refreshed and fuelled.
Events like this don’t come together without the dedication and collaboration of an incredible team. A huge shout-out goes to Mai-Wel, Castle Personnel, I-Help Disability Supports, Finding Yellow, Optimum Health Solutions, PCYC Cessnock, PCYC Police Youth Engagement Officer, Link to Life, Ranon Holstein, Essential Skills and Training, and River Community Services for their hard work in making the day a resounding success.
