Carissa’s Employment Success with Mai-Wel
From nerves to newfound employment
For Carissa, employment isn’t just about having a job, it’s about regaining a sense of normality and belonging, giving back to the community, connecting with people, and finding a sense of purpose.
When she first connected with Mai-Wel, Carissa’s specialist employment team prepared supports that we tailored to her needs. Thanks to open communication with Hunter Valley Community Mental Health Services, her journey was made easier, removing the pressure of retelling her story to another provider over and over again.
Getting the right support for Carissa’s goals
Like many people, Carissa was nervous about her first day of placement. But she wasn’t alone. A Mai-Wel support worker was right by her side, checking in and making sure she felt comfortable and supported throughout the day.
“That’s why I went through the Employment Assistance Program with Mai-Wel,” Carissa explains. “Mai-Wel supported me in getting ready for work, from building basic skills and practicing teamwork, to completing my work placement.”
By the time she finished, Carissa realised just how big an achievement it was. “It felt like such a big step in the right direction,” she recalls. “I felt like I had a foot back in the door of employment.”
Turning experience into employment
That foot in the door soon opened into something more, with Carissa gaining ongoing employment!
Employment has since transformed Carissa’s life. She’s discovered a renewed sense of belonging and purpose through being part of a team. The routine of work, along with the independence of earning an income, has given her not only stability but also the freedom to enjoy life more fully.
“Employment has given me a sense of belonging and purpose,” she says. “It provides me with a routine from week to week, and having some extra well-earned funds has added a bit of freedom to my life.”
Carissa is thriving in her role
Her confidence has grown, her skills continue to develop, and she looks to the future with optimism.
Her advice for others considering Mai-Wel’s support is simple:
“I would definitely recommend Mai-Wel to others. The staff and assistance have been so wonderful and supportive. They make you feel very welcomed and help you realise potential in yourself you may not have seen before.”
Carissa’s journey is a powerful reminder of how the right support, encouragement and opportunities can transform lives.
