David Brings a Doom Eternal Cosplay Cape to Life Through Open Studio
A creative goal becomes a wearable achievement
David recently set himself a big creative goal: to design and sew a wearable cosplay cape inspired by Doom Eternal. With support through Mai-Wel’s Social, Community and Creative Pathways Open Studio program, he turned that idea into a finished, high-quality piece he can proudly wear.
Learning new skills, step by step
When David began, garment making felt overwhelming. He had no prior sewing experience and the machines, materials, and techniques were all new. Working alongside an art mentor, David broke the project into clear, achievable steps and built his skills one stage at a time.
Through the process, David learned how to:
- Set up and thread a sewing machine
- Sew straight seams and curved sections
- Dye fabric to achieve the look he was aiming for
As David’s skills developed, so did his confidence and independence. Each completed stage became proof that he could take on a complex project and see it through.

Creativity, persistence and confidence in action
The finished cape is a strong reflection of David’s creativity, persistence, and willingness to try something new. Projects like this support goals related to confidence, skill development, and creative expression, while also showing what is possible with the right structure and support.
