William’s job search with Mai-Wel commenced when he was referred by his teachers at Mount View High School to Mai-Wel’s Cessnock-based Get Started. William attended Get Started for four hours each week during his school terms to develop his skills for employment and post-school activities.
Get Started is Mai-Wel’s innovative School to Work transition service designed specifically for Year 10/11/12 students to better help them to prepare for the world of work and the opportunities that exist after school life. Get Started is delivered from MWLFS Cessnock and Maitland.
Through Get Started, William demonstrate he was a hands on worker while completing work experience at Bunnings. He also learnt new skills for car detailing while participating in the car wash crew.
When William finished school he received Finding and Keeping a Job NDIS funding which he used to participate in Mai-Wel’s Step Up, an initiative for school leavers to build capacity and develop employment skills and confidence to find and sustain employment.
Through Step Up, William continued to build on his employability skills, and was connected with The Sign Place, Maitland where he has now been employed for 5 months.
Before working, William said he was bored and unhappy, and wanted a job not only for the money but to gain skills and improve his life overall.
He said it only took a couple of shifts to adjust to his job and that working is not as hard as he thought it would be. Over time William has built up his stamina and can do things that he once couldn’t do, he can stay on task for longer and has improved focus.
He says he is enjoying his job, has a sense of achievement and skills to create a better life for himself.
William’s advice to anyone who is working towards their goal of employment – “keep plugging away and trying to get a job. It will happen!”
Well done William!
