Ticking off Bucket List Dreams with Mai-Wel’s Support Coordination

When Vicki met with her Support Coordinator in March this year, she didn’t expect her joke about being unable to travel due to COVID, to turn into a hot air balloon ride adventure!

Support Coordinators assist people with disability to use their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding to pursue their goals and aspirations. Vicki attended an appointment with Mai-Wel Support Coordinator Sarah in March, along with her sister Gayle and Mai-Wel Supported Living Service Lead Keziah, to discuss Vicki’s plan. While talking about future plans and how COVID-19 is putting a stop to everyone’s travels, Vicki made a joke about wanting to go on a hot air balloon ride.

This joke quickly turned into reality, when Vicki decided she would love to try this new and exciting experience. Working together with Mai-Wel and Gayle, they assured Vicki that they would make this happen if she really wanted to go.

Over the next few months Sarah researched hot air balloon companies that would be able to safely transport Vicki on the flight, finding Beyond Ballooning was the best choice for her needs. Sarah continued to communicate with Keziah to ensure a support worker was there to make Vicki’s flight a safe and special experience. Vicki was able to meet up with Sarah to discuss exactly which member of staff she would like to spend the day with and chose her support worker Julie.

At this point, Vicki was able to work with Julie to determine her flight plan! At last the date and time were set and everything was ready to head out to Pokolbin for her flight on the morning on the 7th June!

Vicki and Julie arrived at Polkolbin at 5:30 am. It was a cold morning but they got to watch the sunrise from up in the heights over the Hunter Valley, and Vicki had an amazing time. Once they returned back to earth, Vicki and Julie headed out to the Crowne Plaza for a fancy breakfast.

With the help of Mai-Wel’s Support Coordination and Support Staff, Vicki was able to achieve her goal and tick ‘going on a hot air balloon flight’ off her bucket list!

“It was lots of fun,” said Vicki, “I want to go again!”

Vicki can’t wait to plan her next adventure.
