Sharon is getting ready for the hospitality world with work experience!

Once again, St Joseph’s College have teamed up with Mai-Wel’s Step Up to provide Sharon with some experience in the hospitality industry by helping out in the school’s canteen.

Sharon started work experience at St Joseph’s College canteen at the start of 2021, when Term 1 commenced, where she will continue to attend every Thursday for some time. Along with attending Step Up supports in Maitland, this work experience will help Sharon build up her workplace capacity and develop a number of employability skills including confidence, working in a team, problem solving, workplace stamina and money handling.

Each week, Sharon looks forward to attending work experience in the canteen. During her time there, Sharon assists the canteen supervisor to prepare lunches, serve students in breaks, re-stock products in the fridge and shelves, as well as with general cleaning in the food prep area. By speaking to the student’s when taking their orders, Sharon has also been getting a chance to put her customer service skills to use, as well as practice handling money and calculating change.

Communicating with team members, teachers and students has been a huge factor in building Sharon’s confidence. She has particularly enjoyed being a valuable member to the team. Due to this, Sharon is able to work independently whilst in the canteen and is looking forward to serving students with EFTPOS in the coming weeks.

Sharon has enjoyed being part of the team at St Joseph’s Canteen and is always eager to help out and learn new things. Well done to Sharon!
