Getting Out and About with Work Life Connect, Cessnock

Each Friday Work Life Connect’s Community Access program takes off to explore the greater Hunter.

The Community Access programs aims to assist participants of Work Life Connect meet up in a small group, practice using public transport and participate in activities and events happening in the wider Hunter community.

Starting in May, the participants came together to develop a 12 week schedule of locations throughout Maitland and Newcastle they wanted to explore. Since then, each Friday the group get together and head out to explore what the community has to offer. This not only helps everyone build their independence, confidence and stamina, but is also a great chance to make a few friends along the way!

One of the first places the group chose to explore was Greenhill’s Shopping Centre. They set off Friday morning on the bus, practicing their travel training skills. When the group got to the shopping centre it was straight to Time Zone for some fun on the arcade games! The day was rounded out with some shopping and a delicious lunch before the group headed back Cessnock.

Not only was the day a whole heap of fun, but the participants were able to gain and practice a whole host of important skills, including:

  • Building the confidence to access the community and it’s services
  • Building up stamina and endurance for work
  • Working on social and communication skills in a supportive small-group setting
  • Travel training
  • Developing a positive self-esteem and self-image

Each week, the Community Access group will continue to build their skills and confidence accessing their local community and explore what exciting activities and opportunities the Hunter region has to offer.
