Nadine’s taken the first steps towards open employment

Meet Nadine, an attendee of Mai-Wel’s Step Up, who was very excited to recently complete her first course.

Nadine was supported by Step Up, which she engages in using her NDIS funding for 1:1 supports, to complete an online Vocational Pathways course. With the help of her Support Worker Lisa to assist with reading and writing, Nadine was able to learn all about the expectations and requirements in the workplace. She has now completed the course, gaining an official qualification with a Certificate I in Access to Vocational Pathways.

Now Nadine is working towards her next goal; completing work experience. Lisa and Nadine did some cold canvasing of workplaces at Green Hills Shopping Centre. This included approaching Coles to discuss doing work experience, and Nadine was thrilled when Coles agreed!

Nadine will be commencing work experience at Coles each Thursday, where she will put the skills learnt in her course to practical use. Some of the biggest skills Nadine is excited to build on is communicating with others in a workplace setting, following instructions and directions, understanding WHS processes. This will also be a good chance to test out any transferrable skills Nadine has already acquired in her current Australian Disability Enterprises employment, which she can use for open employment opportunities in the future.

Well done Nadine!
