Welcome to Mindfulness Monday Activity 7 – Following the Sun
Hi everybody, welcome to the next Mindfulness Monday art therapy exercise!
In today’s activity we will be following the sun! It will be about relaxation and focusing on the present moment through art making.
This one might take some time to find the right time and spot in your house to do and it will also work best with bright sunshine. Look around your home or backyard for a place where there is both sunshine and shadow. Look on tables, desks, the floor, or grass area. Choose a spot where you will be happy to draw. Or you can place your drawing surface in a bright and sunny area and find an object to put next to your paper that will cast a shadow onto your art surface.
Once you have found a sunny and shady spot, place paper or cardboard there. Tape your drawing surface down so that it doesn’t move, or if your using a sketchbook then try and keep it very still as you draw. Can you see both shadows and sunshine on your paper? This is what we are after.
Use any drawing or painting tools to trace the boundary of the sunshine and shadow. This is the spot where the sunshine meets the shadow. You might also like to colour the different spaces on your page now. If you sit for a moment with your paper surface still, you will notice how quickly the sun moves! Keep retracing the sunshine spots on your drawing surface as it moves. You can do this for as long as you like!

If you feel any distress, bring your attention to your breath for a minute and notice air going in and out of your body.
