IDPwD, held on 3 December, aims to promote awareness, inclusion and acceptance, and celebrate people with disability across the globe. This year’s theme is “leadership and participation of persons with disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
“Mai-Wel puts participants at the heart of everything we do. The theme of International Day of People with Disability based around leadership and participation, coincides with Mai-Wels position to ensure that we continually seek feedback and consultation with our participants. This year theme perfectly aligns with the launch of our Participant Advisory Committee to create a committee that would help provide these roles for the participants we support.” says Lynne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the Mai-Wel Group.
Mai-Wel provides services for NDIS participants, job seekers in need of specialist employment supports and young job seekers. As such, several different committees will be formed to represent the different needs of the people we support across Mai-Wel as an organisation. The first will be for NDIS funded participants, who attend Mai-Wel for a range of services, from community participation, creative arts and other leisure programs, social support and living options.
Committee meetings will provide participants with an avenue to discuss their feedback about aspects of Mai-Wel as a service provider and share new ideas amongst peers and with staff. From day-to-day operations, events and accessible infrastructure, Committee members will be encouraged to share their perspective and have their feedback shape the services Mai-Wel provides.
“The Committee is a wonderful opportunity for our participants to experience what it’s like to be a member of a committee and the responsibilities that come with this role,” says Lynne.
“Members will be in charge of liaising with other participants to bring their feedback forward at meetings. They will also be encouraged to attend Mai-Wel events and other speaking opportunities to discuss their experiences with Mai-Wel and other relevant matters.
“Mai-Wel staff members will be able to present ideas such as new programs, events and policies to the Committee and get valuable feedback from the people who matter most – our participants. The Committee will allow us to ensure we are providing quality services that people need, and will allow us to best address the issues that are impacting the people we support both internally and in the wider community.
“The Committee is just one step towards bridging the gap between the community and people with disability. We want this to be a way to promote people with disability not only being considered in issues facing the community, but to be a voice that actually shapes the events and facilities in our region.”
