Ethan is discovering what options await him post-school with Get Started

Ethan has been taking part in the Get Started program at Mai-Wel on Vincent in Cessnock for some time now and is enjoying preparing for the world of work while he’s still finishing up school.

Get Started is an in innovative program only available with Mai-Wel. With Get Started, students in Year 10, 11 and 12 are able to start preparing for the world of work and exploring all the different opportunities available for them after school life. Students are able to tailor supports to their strengths, wants and needs, helping them to discover what it is they want to do post-schooling and how to get there.

Ethan has been able to gain assistance from support staff to use different types of technology to assess his strengths. In Get Started language, Ethan is taking part in the ‘discovery phase’ of the program. During the discovery phase, Ethan will be exploring skills, abilities, interests and training needs in order to have supports that are goal oriented and tailored to his interests.

So what can Ethan and other students taking part in the program expect to achieve with Get Started?

  • Access to timely and accurate career guidance and information
  • Opportunities to develop and practice employment related skills
  • Access to structured workplace learning, employment opportunities and vocational learning opportunities
  • Seamless coordination of support through local partnerships between schools, agencies, businesses, individuals and their community.
  • Transition to Vocational Education and Training.
  • Transition to employment.

In late 2018, Mai-Wel was thrilled to be the recipients of a $30,000 Beyond Bank Australia Foundation Grant to support young people with disabilities in their transition from school to work through Get Started. Thank you to the team at Beyond Bank for their ongoing support.
