Brad started supports in Mai-Wel during high school through the Get Started program. Get Started is a transition service designed specifically for Year 10/11/12 students to prepare them for the world of work after school life. During his supports, Brad spent lots of time completing employment discovery work, allowing him to be open to exploring different industries to discover what type of employment would be right for him long-term.
Brad graduated school and Get Started in 2020 and transitioned to Mai-Wel’s Step Up program using his School Leaver Employment Supports NDIS funding to gain 1:1 supports. Brad’s goals with Step Up were to explore work experience options and to prepare himself for employment in the future. One of Brad’s major achievements with Step Up has been gaining his licence, enabling him to now travel independently to his supports.
Brad was also assisted to research work experience options and identify suitable options. After this, Brad and his support worker engaged in ‘cold canvasing’; a process of directly approaching employers Brad was interested in and marketing his employment skills directly to them.
Through this approach, Brad was able to build a connection with Spotlight Rutherford, which led to a work experience opportunity in the Fabric/Material Department. Now Brad attends work experience with his support worker every Monday from 9am – 12:30pm.
Spotlight have tasked Brad with a variety of jobs that have assisted him to gain an understanding of what it would be like to be employed. This includes completing stocktake in the materials section, using his numeracy, literacy and problem solving skills to measure rolls of material, ticketing, stock return and customer service.
Both Brad and his support worker would like to extend a huge thank you to Alyse, Samuel and the rest of the team at Spotlight Rutherford for being so supportive, welcoming and accommodating to Brad. He has been able to gain a lot from his work experience and the team have made it both enjoyable and valuable.
Brad has his eye on the end goal of gaining paid employment, and he is well on his way through the skills and knowledge he is currently building.
