About Mai-Wel

The Mai-Wel group enhances lives through opportunity & choice

Mai-Wel creates and delivers vibrant, innovative services and successful businesses which provide opportunities for people with a disability to achieve their dreams and goals for life.

Mai-Wel began in 1960 when a group of families met and shared their vision of an education and opportunities for life for their children with a disability. Throughout the years the tireless efforts of community groups, families and individuals have seen these humble beginnings develop into the independent organisation that exists today.

Mai-Wel offers a range of services for people with a disability in the areas of Living Options, Working Life and Lifestyle & Leisure, along with outreach services to the Lower and Upper Hunter, Maitland and Port Stephens areas.

Mai-Wel is registered to provide support to participants under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Mai-Wel guarantees to provide all participants with a service that is supported by a commitment to best practice and an outstanding history of community spirit built on trust

Mai-Wel was one of the first disability organisations in Australia to gain Quality Assurance Accreditation and continues to uphold the rights of people with a disability. Mai-wel continues to provide a dedicated and outstanding service for people with a disability and their families. Mai-Wel’s commitment to quality training and support provides a capable and wel-adjusted workforce for the Hunter region.

Our History

In November 1960 a number of families met and shared their concerns about the lack of recognition of the needs of their children with a disability for an education and opportunities for life. This event marked the formation of Mai-Wel. The challenge to remove the discrimination experienced by people with a disability and their carers is as strong a motive today as it has been throughout the past 60 years.

In 2012, The Mai-Wel Group received funding from the Australian Government’s Department of Environment, to launch a History Project, researching and documenting the organisation’s rich history and contribution to the Maitland community. The Project was completed mid-2014 and is available in the form of a book and short film documentary. The Mai-Wel Group would like to thank local journalist, Alek Shulha, for the many hours he volunteered to help bring this project to life.
